Chapter 1: I Am Called A Fool And Then I Die
Chapter 1: I Am Called A Fool And Then I Die
Finally, a room that I imagined would fit in this setting.
It was a tall, circular room, dimly lit by blue braziers in random points along the wall. Blue and purple curtains hang on tiers that surround the floor I'm currently standing on. In the middle shone a floating crystal. Every step I take towards it changes its color to each of the rainbow's hues.
But the room was empty, save for me. It was kind of eerie, standing there, illuminated by the faint light of the giant jewel. But I steel myself, knowing I've been in these kinds of places before whenever I play my games. Always a single, radiating, pulsating, glowing crystal. My gut tells me that this is gonna be a start of an adventure, like beginning a new game. I walk towards it. Slowly at first. Who knows? It could be a trap. Then I stop a mere arm's reach in front of it. It hums slightly. It's probably brimming with some life-invigorating energy, or encasing some dead guy's spirit. Ah, but being an avid gamer makes me think of these ideas so compulsively.
Anyway, I reach out and try to touch it, when I hear that multitude of voices speak again.
"Stop. Touching the Stone would only endanger your life."
My hand automatically pulls back. I wait again for the voice. Silence. Then I remember the third law of Newton: an object only reacts when you act upon it. Or something. Either way, I'll have to do something. Speak up.
"Why am I here? Who are you?", I ask the circular room. Immediately after my question came the answer. And immediately, the floor started to warm up.
"You are a Potential Fool. A blank slate, a clean sheet of paper. You are an untainted mind, and you are here because we, the Maestro, has seen the power in you."
Did they just call me a fool? And what did they mean by untainted? Years huddled in front of my PC, wallowing in the bottom of the Internet did nothing but 'taint' it.
"Who are you?" I ask again. I receive a short answer. "We are the Maestro."
I grumble. Better ask something with sense. "Where is my family?"
"Your family is just an illusion. You were brought here for the special reason of being a Potential Fool."
"Stop this!" I yell before the 'Maestro' even finishes.
Silence befell that circular room again. I felt like I angered whoever was speaking. "I'm sorry?" I whimpered. The Stone vibrated. Then I realize it wasn't a Stone at all. It was a viewing lens. Nothing magical was with it. At least, not that I know of. The lens slowly lowered down and lights flickered and turned on around me. Across from me, the wall parted, revealing a narrow doorway. This time a single, male voice rang out.
"Come on, through here!", the voice said. I followed it, and entered the doorway.
Now I'm in a blank white room. What, more hidden voices? I thought. I tapped on the floor with my bare feet. I knocked on the wall. I kick it, only to receive a sharp pain on my big toes. I paced around hopelessly until I hear that voice again.
The guy was actually standing with his back to me, I barely noticed him. He was wearing the same robes as I am, except it was just plain white. His hood was smoldering; like he didn't want anything covering his head and face. His face.
He would've been handsome. His star-like blue eyes. His thin lips. A straight perfect nose. Except half of his face was burned off. But he smiled at me. This is probably the friendliest gesture I've encountered since having that small man open the door for me. I was staring at his seared face for a long time I barely noticed the hand he was offering me. I took it and shook hands.
"My name's Harvey Maarl." He said in a light voice.
"I'm...I'm Mariell." I said, trying to trust him. We let go of our hands and stared at each other.
"Did you see those burned skeletons in the last room?" He was looking at the top of my shoulder. I didn't notice anything back there at all. It was so dark and I focused on that crystal I didn't really see anything else. So I shake my head.
Then I come to the conclusion that whoever got stuck in there was burnt to a crisp.
"Y'know, it makes me wonder why they only let two people in a room like this." He was walking away from me. I feel something bad is gonna happen. Like the floor would open up. Or the walls would close in, crushing our bones.
"Maybe we're gonna have to kill each other."
I didn't realize that it came from me. I cupped my hands over my mouth. My eyes widen in shock. Harvey stood a few meters away from me. Staring at me. His eyes were wide too. And then his face went blank and expressionless. He nods. "You're right. Whoever lives would get out of here."
He lunges at me. I felt his fist against my right cheek and I'm thrown down to the floor. He hit me! I feel the sting on my cheek, opening and closing my mouth in an effort to get back the feeling in my jaw. I see him closing his eyes and putting his hands together. Is he praying? Then a flash of light appears and he's holding a long, double-edged sword. He is gonna kill me. I focus myself, but all that came to my mind was a toaster. One appeared on my hand and I threw it at my opponent. It missed but he was startled at my power to have summoned something complex in just small time. I tried focusing again and this time pulled up a flat iron.
I was now standing up. "You really are a woman!" He said, laughing, and charged at me. I had nothing to do but block his sword. To my surprise, his sword broke. The shard that would've skewered me shot above my head, sticking itself against the blank white wall. "What the -- ?" But before he had time to finish, I smacked him on the chin with the iron. Which turned out to be titanium. "Serves you right for hitting a girl." I was actually smiling right now.
He focused again and this time summoned a menacing battle ax. With blood stains. It made me think why he needed to add bloodstains since it's all scary without them.
I slid the iron at his feet. And as I expected, he dodged it. But he didn't expect the flying copper thermos heading straight at his face.
It hit him square in the eye, gave a satisfying sound of broken cheekbones and staggered backward, dropping the bloodied ax to the ground. Now he's mad.
Sporting a black eye, he was now circling me. He summoned a large spear. But I was ready for him. I summoned a television set. Gold this time. He charged. I threw the T.V. set.
His head was caught in it. I willed the T.V. set to electrocute him, but not until he threw me back the spear.
I've never felt this kind of pain before. Warm, cold and stinging. I looked down and see the spear sticking into me. I already know Harvey's dead. But that's the least of my worries. Right now I'm losing liters of blood. And my vision's already darkening. Or is it that the lights are going out. I don't know. I see light. There's a figure at the end. Feminine. Am I seeing my own soul leaving?
I black out.
